Hey There, I’m Katie, also known as The Literacy Lady …
Wife, Mama x3, teacher, reading specialist, literacy advocate, dream builder... I’m running on coffee and Jesus as I build this summer reading camp and I believe that the only people crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that actually do!
I’m the founder and owner here at The Literacy Camp®, a summer reading camp designed for children at ALL levels - those that love reading and writing, as well as those that don’t!
I believe education is the key to a brighter future. I love supporting families with simplified learning activities and routines you can do at home with your children. I’m all about EASY learning and calm homes (well, you know, as calm as it can get anyways with 3 kids running around at my house). And we created that kind of environment for you at camp…so you can relax, families!
The Literacy Camp® was founded in 2014!
We’ve created a space where kids experience EASY, FUN, CONFIDENCE BUILDING learning!
Why? Because we wanted to be a part of the solution. We saw students, teachers & families frustrated by the learning loss that happens over the summer (on average in the US it’s 36%!!!) when kids lacked summer reading & writing opportunities.
We also saw a need for a summer reading camp for kiddos that LOVED to read, write, learn & wanted a place to thrive in these areas over the summer.
We heard teachers & families wishing it were easier to get kids to WANT to learn, LOVE learning & become LIFELONG learners.
So…The Literacy Camp® was born with the mission to provide communities with a summer camp experience that engages kids in a way parents AND kids LOVE! To grow & develop a LOVE for reading & writing!
I’ve got a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Hope College & a Masters in Curriculum & Instruction from Michigan State University – with a Literacy & Language emphasis & a Reading Specialist certification. But most importantly … I love teaching, kids, leading phenomenal teachers & making learning FUN!
Our family is so proud of The Literacy Camp® growth – especially hearing parents talk about how much their kids love reading & writing after attending.

It’s my family’s honor to create access to camp for more kids than ever before! We’re working alongside local businesses, school districts, and individual sponsors to make sure EVERY kid has access to camp, regardless of financial need.
